Celebrating 25 Years of Service

Since its inception by Sue and Dr. Mark Wheeler in 1984, S.T.A.R.S. has quietly grown from small start-up program to one of Siouxland’s most established nonprofit organizations...while also becoming one of the oldest equine-assisted programs in the nation. Today, we host a year-round riding facility with therapeutic riding program, a K-9 program, and a strong team of NARHA-certified staff, loyal volunteers, and of course our corps of equine & canine partners.

Demand for our specialized form of animal-assisted services is growing by leaps and bounds. We’re helping war veterans recover from burn injuries, brain trauma, and lost limbs. Our K9 unit is expanding into hospitals, physical therapy settings, and nursing homes. Demand utilizing horses to help abused women, at-risk youth, corporate teams, and children’s skill-building camps is growing.

We ask you to commemorate our 25 years of service by continuing to support, volunteer, and serve the Special Troopers Adaptive Riding School. To participate in S.T.A.R.S is to believe for yourself the tremendous power of humans and animals working together!
