Therapeutic Riding

What is Therapeutic Riding?
Therapeutic Riding is a special horseback riding program designed to improve the well-being of individuals with disabilities. It uses the horse's movement to help with physical, emotional, and social skills.

Benefits of Therapeutic Riding:

  • Strength and Flexibility: Regular riding helps build muscle strength and improve flexibility.
  • Balance and Coordination: Participants work on their balance and coordination through different riding activities.
  • Self-Regulation: Riding encourages emotional regulation and self-control.
  • Breathing and Circulation: The rhythmic movement of the horse can aid in improving respiratory and circulatory health.
  • Self-Confidence and Self-Esteem: Accomplishing riding tasks can significantly boost self-confidence and self-worth.

Eligibility and Participation:

  • Age Requirement: Available to anyone aged 2 or older with a diagnosed disability.
  • Variety of Diagnoses: STARS works with individuals with conditions such as autism, ADHD, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, anxiety, depression, and Down syndrome.
  • Medical Approval: Participants must obtain approval from a doctor due to potential contraindications related to safety.

Class Structure:

  • Schedule: Classes are typically offered in the evenings from Monday to Wednesday.
  • Session Format: Each session lasts six weeks, with participants attending once a week for an hour.
  • Activities: Participants engage in grooming, tacking, and riding their horses, tailored to individual goals and abilities.

Instruction:

Certified Instructors: Classes are led by PATH-certified instructors who focus on the specific goals of each participant, integrating various riding skills and activities such as games and different gaits (walking, trotting).
